When does your roof need cleaning and why?

Looking after your roof with an occasional clean and inspection could prevent expensive repairs later down the line. A new roof may last for some years before it needs cleaning, especially if it has been treated to prevent the growth of moss, lichens and algae. So, when your roof looks like there may be green stuff growing on it, that is time to take action. Our Team of Roofers have over 20+ Years experience in Moss Removal and cleaning. We cover Swindon, Chippenham, Devizes and local surrounding areas.  Contact us to arrange a roof inspection or cleaning.

Roof Inspections

We inspect all aspects of the roof and roofline including gutters, chimneys, dormers, fascia, soffits, downspouts and skylights.

How long does it take to clean a roof?

Roof cleaning itself is a task that is normally completed within a day. If sealing is then required it can take up to 2 days. This is to ensure that the roof is fully dried and reinspected prior to the sealant being applied. This time can obviously vary though pending the size of the property and access to the roof.

How do you prevent Moss build up on your roof?

Keep your roof and gutters clean removing any debris such as leaves and twigs to reduce the opportunity for a build up of moss and algae. Check for any damage to tiles that might let water in, investigate and fix any issues straight away.

Why do moss, lichens and algae grow on my roof?

Plants simply need air, sunlight and water to photosynthesise and grow. Your  roof will provide plenty of that. Over time microscopic algae and lichen spores blown by the wind will land on your roof.  The spores will have gripped on to the roof surface and started to colonise it and make it their home.  It allows other bigger plants like moss to start to grow when seeds land on the roof. Moss loves a nice shady area which enables it to keep moist better, so can often appear on some aspects of the roof more than others.  Moss, algae and lichens grow steadily on roof tiles and roof surfaces making it look unsightly and could even harm the roof if left untreated.

Why should moss be removed from your roof?

Roof moss can be damaging and a costly problem if left untreated. Moss absorbs and retains lots of water which is why in history it was used for bandages and nappies. Because moss is so good at absorbing liquid it gets really heavy, this can add much extra weight to your roof and gutters which might bend or break.

Moss can cause leaks and inlets for water. Moss anchors itself to roof surfaces with a hair-like roots called rhizoids. These will find tiny gaps and grow into them and spread, making the smallest of gaps larger over time. This will allow moisture to seep into the inside of the roof

How much does it cost to clean a roof?

There are a number of factors to consider such as the size of the roof, how dirty it is and how accessible it is. A standard 3-4 bed property will normally take a day to clean. Why not give us a ring to discuss your property and we should be able to give you a free quotation.
