Gutter Talk

We love to talk about gutters, so we have provided a helpful diagram below to help you talk about your roofline and to understand which bits are the fascias and which are the soffits as well as a few other words. That way, if we are both talking the same language, we will understand each other perfectly and (excuse the pun!) the work won’t go down the drain!

Do you understand the Gutter and Roofline parts?

We hope our handy diagram and descriptions will help you understand which bits are called fascias  and where the soffit is etc, so when we talk about your roofline we know we understand each other perfectly!

What are Fascias?

Fascias or fascia boards are the main body of your roofline. The word fascia is Latin for  band or bandage. Fascias hold the guttering to the exterior of the property and are boards that sit under a roof edge attached to the wall. It is a crucial piece and ensures that your guttering is securely attached to the property.

What are Soffits?

Soffits are the boards that sit underneath the roofline, so you would look upon at these. The word soffit traces back to the Latin word suffixus, meaning “fastened below.”Soffits are fixed under stairs and porches too. The soffit serves as the first barrier between your rafters and the exterior. As such these have to be designed with all the latest weather-proofing technology and they also need to look great as well.

What is Guttering?

Guttering is a narrow channel that redirects rain away from your roofline. Without guttering rain water would run down the walls, making the walls damp and inviting to mould and mildew. Water would also collect around the foundations of the house and this would cause damage over time.

New gutters can last anywhere from 20 to 50 years and can be UPVC or metal. UPVC is the most common choice due to affordability as well as being highly resistant to wear and tear.
